The UK’s financial sector is seeing rapid innovation in decentralised finance (DeFi). Researchers at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (Judge Business School, University of Cambridge) have launched the Cambridge DeFi Navigator, a new open-access dashboard providing real-time data and interactive analytics on the DeFi ecosystem. This platform integrates an empirically grounded taxonomy of DeFi protocols with rich visualisations, giving policymakers, industry and the public a unified view of the fast-growing crypto-finance space. It aims to bridge traditional and decentralised finance by shedding light on adoption trends, liquidity flows, and emerging risks.
Technical Details
The DeFi Navigator aggregates live data on Total Value Locked (TVL) and transaction volumes across decentralised exchanges and lending protocols. It maps the flow of funds between sectors using a detailed DeFi taxonomy, and provides visual charts of capital moving through key smart-contract platforms. The tool also highlights risk indicators – for example, tracking governance-token distributions and security incident reports – to flag when market conditions or protocol parameters may pose vulnerabilities. In addition, the Navigator includes educational modules ("DeFi 101") that explain core concepts, ensuring the complex DeFi landscape is accessible to regulators and businesses.
Why This Matters for Organisations Today
The DeFi sector has grown explosively, reaching over $100 billion in TVL, but remains opaque and fast-changing. The Cambridge DeFi Navigator helps decision-makers navigate this complexity with evidence-based insights. By transparently exposing adoption patterns and potential failure points, it enables financial institutions, regulators and corporate treasury teams to manage risks associated with cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. Ultimately, this research-driven platform empowers industry and government to develop informed strategies for emerging digital-asset ecosystems, balancing innovation with security and compliance in the evolving UK finance landscape.
